How Leaky Is Your Gut?  A Tummy Challenge For Everyone

Why you should care if you have a leaky gut? Your intestines have tight junctions that bans the “bad” microbes such as pathogens (a bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease) for example, from passing the blood-brain barrier.  You do not want pathogens to cross into the blood and be transported towards the bloodstream of the brain because it can cause clinical dysfunction. This is seen in brain fogginess, even brain connectivity issues such as dementia-like symptoms, and poor digestion or gut dysfunction as seen in poor elimination, irritable bowel, or a compromised digestion.

How Do You Determine If You Have A Leaky Gut?

There is a simple test with GABA, a supplement that produces a calming/relaxing effect. GABA is larger than a small nanoparticle that can and should cross the blood brain barrier in these intestinal junctions.  It also does not have a blood-brain barrier transport protein.  With the understanding of GABA’s properties, it can not cross the blood brain barrier.  So if you take GABA and it has an effect on you, then you know your intestinal junctions are leaky.

What Can You Do About Testing For Leaky Gut

What do you do for the test?

  1. Take 800 to 1,000 mg of GABA
  2. Timeframe: 2 to 3 hours to notice effects if any from taking GABA

It is best to take GABA and perform this test between 6 and 9 PM in the evening; so if you get drowsy after taking GABA you can sleep the GABA off and it does not affect you during the work day.

What should you notice?

If the GABA crosses your blood brain barrier you will experience the following:

  • Relaxation
  • Calming
  • Sedation
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Panic

A Little Reminder

Please only use GABA to test your gut leakiness; taking GABA on a routine basis over time can shut off the GABA receptor sites and your retest will not be accurate.
